UGC / AICTE Equivalency — Degree Must Be Recognised
Foreign B.Tech / B.Eng degrees must be recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) for equivalency in India. Without AIU-recognised status, the degree may not be accepted for government jobs, higher studies (M.Tech/MBA), or PSU recruitment. Always verify the university's AIU-recognition status before applying.

Course Must Be Conducted in English
For recognition in India, the B.Tech program must be delivered in English. Programs taught partially or entirely in a local language (Russian, Chinese, Arabic etc.) may not qualify for AIU equivalency. Confirm the medium of instruction in writing from the university before enrolling.

University Must Be Government-Recognised in Its Own Country
The university must be officially recognised by the national government or accreditation body of its home country. Private, unaccredited, or "degree mill" institutions are not eligible for AIU equivalency. Check the official national university list of the respective country before applying.

Government Jobs & PSUs — Engineering Degree Restrictions
Central government jobs via UPSC / SSC / PSU (ISRO, DRDO, ONGC, etc.) typically require AICTE-approved Indian degrees or AIU-equivalent foreign degrees. Foreign B.Tech graduates cannot appear in GATE directly without AIU equivalency. Verify eligibility for your target job/exam before choosing a foreign university.

GATE Exam Eligibility — M.Tech / Higher Studies in India
Students wishing to pursue M.Tech / M.E. at IITs, NITs, or IIITs after their foreign B.Tech must obtain AIU equivalency first. GATE exam eligibility specifically requires a recognised engineering degree. Factor in the equivalency process (typically 3–6 months, fee-based) into your post-graduation plans.

Student Visa & Legal Study Status
Students must hold a valid student visa (not tourist or visit visa) for the entire duration of their program. Working part-time is restricted or prohibited in most countries for Indian students on student visas. Overstaying or studying on the wrong visa type can result in deportation and permanent ban — always verify visa conditions with the respective embassy.

No Fake University / Distance Learning Rule
Online, distance-learning, or hybrid B.Tech programs from foreign universities are not recognised by AIU or AICTE for equivalency in India. The degree must be from a full-time, on-campus program at a physically accredited institution. Degrees from unrecognised or blacklisted institutions have no legal value in India.

Minimum Duration — 4 Years Full-Time
For AIU equivalency, the B.Tech / B.Eng program must be a minimum of 4 years (8 semesters) full-time. Accelerated programs of 2–3 years do not qualify for equivalency with Indian B.Tech degrees, even if the university is otherwise reputed.
